DA has Changed

and not for the better . . .

I have been on DA for TWO AND A HALF YEARS and have noticed a lot of changes happening to DA!

Firstly...

The Introduction of COLLECTIONS means that people no longer have to view the work to :+fav: it or add to their collections.

Secondly...

The NUMBER of Deviants people watch on DA has DRASTICALLY increased.

Thirdly...

The AMOUNT of artwork being submitted is also INCREASING

Because of these THREE reasons, DeviantART is...

NO LONGER ABOUT ART

People are going around and FAVING and COLLECTING artwork without appreciating what the person has spent time creating or capturing.

This has been brought about by the new system DA has put in.  This means that people no longer appreciate the work put up on here, and only take a quick glance at it before moving on to another piece of work.

Please Note that this is not DeviantART's fault but the Deviants fault

People have spent hours on some things creating artwork to post on here, and very few people actually take proper notice of how much effort has gone into making that piece, they don't even read the artists comments which go with the pictures.  Also, because it's so easy to collect work, and go, people don't spend the time to write comments.
I have over twice the number of watchers i had 2 years ago, but i get less comments overall on my work!

Also, I have noticed the use of Control + C and Control + V is being used a lot.  People no longer bother writing comments based on the work that is being or has been faved, they just write out a set comment and paste it into every box.  I came across this with a new club i'd started up, where i Faved some work, and got a comment on the main DA page saying "Thanks a lot for the :+fav: Btw... you have a great gallery!" yet, we had all of 1 deviation in the gallery, and when i checked his activity, at least 12 other deviants he'd posted to around the same time, had exactly the same message!

I feel people no longer use DeviantART for appreciating art, but for trying to get through everything as quickly as possible.

Not everyone does this, but an increasing number do.

If you agree with me, please fav this article, and if not reject it

I want to know how many people also think this is happening. And if you disagree, please leave a comment on why you disagree

The only way I can see of stopping this is to go back to the old ways, don't watch as many deviants, and appreciate the work they put in to their artwork more.

I think people just go on here to charge $20 for doodles.

I've never quite been one to observe trends, but it always seemed to me to be that way--there's just too much 'good' stuff on DA that people just cherry pick (pick being the key word).
Personally, I comment before/if I fave. Admittedly I once would have been glad for any sort of attention :P but I've come to appreciate and reciprocate the innocuous little 'comment'.

I'm sure watching has something to do with the changes we see, but I think commenting would help more than simply watching less people. I feel commenting shows that a deviant actually took the time to look at the art, read the artist comments, and then respond accordingly. However, if you watch a ton of people, you probably won't get around to even looking at the art, much less fave it or comment on it. I also think that people are more concerned with themselves getting popular, rather than trying to help other people realize their potential. Some people might go around faving every deviation in sight because they might hope those artists will come back to their page, leave a thanks and give 'em a pageview. I don't know, I could be completely speculating, but there might just be people out their who fave and watch everything and everyone to get their name out there.

You're right....

I have a few watchers (not mentioning names) who barely comment on my work at all. But every time I upload a new deviation they just add it to their favorites, straight from the inbox. Without even bothering to actually look at it! It's just pathetic. And they do this with everyone else they watch too.

I spend hours on my work, I put effort and meaning into it, it really puts me down when all some of my watchers do is favorite it. How do I know they REALLY like my art then?

Blahhh.... I swear it's all about fame and popularity now. Not just on dA.

I agree. I somtimes feel like i speed threw:/
Really good art is so underloved. most of the other art is fanart/Anime[not that either are good]
but, some bad art is more popular then the awsomesauce art:c that makes me sad

First of all I'd say the main factor is that every anime drawing - no matter how ridiculously poorly drawn - gets at least more VIEWS than, say, poetry. I have read so much good poetry here - and even more bad examples - and I really do appreciate a well-done anime illustration, but most of what is submitted in anime is simply like a 5-minute drawing done in the schoolbus, and even drawn painfully badly.
I don't mean to criticize people's ideas of aesthetics but I think of all definitions of what ART is, it requires at least a trace of craft I'd say. If you disagree let's just call it DeviantWeb or something alike.

Secondly I think everyone has the right to look at what they like to, ignore what they want to ignore, and comment if they want to or not. But being a deviant for more than 7 years, I have to say the connection between the artists on this site was way more intense and honest four years back in time than it is now. And I remember the different branches of art were really balanced, not like today where you find one poem in 1000 deviations and one good photograph among the daily favourites containing 85% anime drawings.

The good ol' days.. :sniff: I fell like an old man! :groucho:

Well true but....honesty there are Deviants who are forgotten that no one cares to look at.....They are never really stood up for I mean most of you all have so many people watching you It's like what the hell and people who are forgotten are always under looked and washed away by the anime and what not.
People sometimes don't leave comments because they don't know what to say. and well in all honesty It's like the guy making the "page views do not matter" and having many or a person saying "I'll rater be hated for what I am then love for what I'm not" and most people like them. It's humorous in a way I've been for 2 years well that's life.
